The Biblical Leadership Show

New Year, New Laughs, Real Leadership

Tim Lansford and Dr. Dean Posey Season 5 Episode 103

Send us a text

Ready for a New Year reset that sticks? We blend joyful banter and unapologetically corny dad jokes with a clear, practical framework for purpose-driven leadership. Between coughs and groans, we dig into what it really means to lead from the front—drawing on the Greek sense of a leader as the one who stands in front and pilots the group—and why that posture matters more than any resolution made at midnight.

We unpack why so many resolutions fade by February: goals without purpose become pressure, and big ambition without systems becomes noise. Our playbook is simple and strong. Anchor every goal to mission. Choose one to three big rocks per quarter. Backdate milestones from a real finish line, then translate each milestone into weekly behaviors. Build accountability that fits your team—weekly for some, monthly for others—but make expectations, timelines, and measures unmistakably clear. Consistency beats intensity, so trade the January sprint for steady momentum you can sustain.

We also talk about honest year-end reviews—own what you controlled, name what you didn’t, and refine your plan. Perfectionism is procrastination in a suit; progress requires starting before it feels perfect. And yes, you’ll get an avalanche of dad jokes ready for your New Year’s party. We close with a preview of our next series in Romans, continuing our journey through the Bible to extract practical leadership principles for modern life and work.

If this episode helps you laugh, plan, and lead with more clarity, tap follow, share it with a friend who’s setting goals, and leave a review to tell us your single biggest “big rock” for the quarter. Let’s make leadership—not the calendar—shape the year ahead.

SPEAKER_03:

How are you doing?

SPEAKER_01:

Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_03:

My gosh, we're both hanging in there today.

SPEAKER_01:

Yes, at the end of the year. Hey. Oh, I've got bronchitis.

SPEAKER_03:

I know. I'm a mess.

SPEAKER_01:

If you hear sniffling, if you hear uh you're a mess and you're sick. Is that it?

SPEAKER_03:

Yes. And you're and you're a mess and you're sick too. That's it. We're just a hot mess going into the new year here.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, but we're excited. This is episode 103.

SPEAKER_03:

103.

SPEAKER_01:

Wow.

SPEAKER_03:

And we are pre-recording this one, you know. Uh it's coming right after our Christmas one. So you never know. We're we're still in Christmas mode, right? So we still we're recording this right after the Christmas one on the 23rd. So we might have to throw some of those Christmas jokes in. I've got about a hundred Christmas jokes. So if you hear Christmas jokes for us, it's right before Christmas. We have two days before Christmas where we're pre-recording our uh New Year's Eve show. Uh but yeah, welcome uh to the Biblical Leadership Show. Um you're excited to be here. I'm Tim Lansford with Dr. Dean Posey with me. Yeah. And uh we're gonna this show is a very unique one. We do it every year. Um we we we talk a little bit about Bible, but really pretty much the whole show is dad jokes. So if you hate our dad jokes segment, then probably join us January 6th and call it good for the viewer.

SPEAKER_01:

Because look at this. I think you could just, you know, replay this show, copy it down, use them at uh the New Year's Eve party.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, that might be a way to go.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, that's it. You could be uh kicked out easily, you know, someone might ask you to go home early or something like that. Or if you go with your spouse, they say, please, please stop.

SPEAKER_03:

Please somehow stop.

SPEAKER_01:

Or if you're with your kids, you can embarrass them, you know. These would be great. These would be great. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

So yeah, absolutely. So so there's a couple things. Um, you know, it's New Year's Eve, which means two things. Everything's talking about everyone's talking about new beginnings, right? Have you set your goals right? Have you done anything? New Year's resolutions, those kind of things. I just did a goal setting with one of my clients, and then he always makes me do goal setting as well. So we're in that thing. And uh, you know, everybody's wildly overconfident about the resolutions this time of year. And and I I would just say just you gotta do the long long haul when it comes to this, you know. Like say the the number one sign-up for gym memberships is January, first of January, the number one day end is February. Yes. That's when they cancel. So a lot of people just don't they don't uh put in the work on it.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, it's uh it's just consistency and uh, you know, as focus, consistent focus in the same direction.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, exactly. And then one of the things I put down here because sometimes the best way to reset the mind, lead better, and step into a new season is to laugh a little bit, groan a little, and remember that leadership doesn't require perfection, just progress.

SPEAKER_01:

Yes. And we're gonna give you some a lot of groaning today.

SPEAKER_03:

We are yes to lower your expectations of the jokes. You know, that's the first thing right there. Exactly correct. And then uh, you know, let's kick off this uh new year the right way, you know.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, so I'll just we'll just talk about uh next week in our our first podcast of the year, which will be episode 104. We're going to um talk about the book of Romans. Now, for those of you who are just finding us out, thank you so much for tuning in today. Um for about the last year, sixteen months or so, we have been going through the Bible and we have been uh focusing on the leadership principles of every book in the Bible. Now, some books only took one week, other books took like two months, three months, four months, whatever half the year, yeah. We just finished the book of Acts uh last week, and so uh today's show is just basically dad jokes. I'm gonna s uh uh talk about the definition of leader in from the Bible uh in just a minute as a kind of uh you know whatever for next week. Um but I think it's really good to give us a new mindset of what what does it mean to be a leader?

SPEAKER_03:

Right.

SPEAKER_01:

Um and then next week we'll focus on Romans uh we might get through it in one week, probably two weeks. It's a fantastic book. Um but let's just go right into it. So uh the the word leads, someone who leads, uh the Greek word for that, and I'm probably gonna mispronounce it, but um proistaminos. Proistaminos.

SPEAKER_03:

Did better than me.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. Anyway, that literally means one who stands in the front or one who pilots the group. So someone like pilots the plane, right, uh, you know, the flag bearer, uh the point of the spear, that is the leader. And so the question is as you get ready for the new year, are you doing that as the leader of whatever group it could be? You know, are you the one that's standing out in the front? Are you the one that's the point of the spear, or have you delegated that to someone else? Right. And uh maybe one of the things you can do uh to examine your own leadership style is to say, okay, when or how frequent have I done that? Have I been out in the front? Am I the person um who is out in the front, or am I letting someone else take the lead? Now, obviously, we have talked a lot about equipping the next generation of leaders or the people around you, um, and that's really, really good. But uh the leader is the one who takes that initiative to do that. And so uh just thinking about that as we get ready for next year and as your goal setting, uh, maybe one of the things that needs to happen in uh your leadership uh you know development is to say, okay, I didn't do that well on this particular project. I I just you know gave it off to somebody else, and maybe I need to step up and take a little bit more of the lead next year. So anyway, we'll we'll get to that next week.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, and and that's one of the things that we we say all year long. It doesn't have to be the new year to have new beginnings, right? At any time your new year can start, you can do goal setting and and uh start the new year. But it here's where we're at. We're going into the new year, so now we're gonna talk about it even more, you know, and and set your goals up, you know. Uh set them up for success, you know, do do monthly goals, weekly goals, do six-month goals, do yearly. You can do a five-year and ten year, but I'm worried about more of the current year coming up. And then what I want you to put in the goal setting is when are you gonna review the goals? I meet with uh my one of my accountability partners every month, and we go where we at on our yearly goals to see what we need to, if we're we're kicking some royal booty, right? And we're we're we're attacking, and then we need to raise our goals up a little bit because we set them too low, or we might have set, you know, six months, they might be too high. So then we have to dial it back or figure out a plan. How do we we really get this thing going so we meet those goals? So you can't just wait. So many times people do it last year at this time, they set their goals and now they're doing it again this time of the year, and they don't look at them the entire year. And I think that's one of the biggest things on goal setting is make sure you have a review time scheduled that you can uh look at them every month, whether they're family goals, business goals, uh whatever goals they might be setting.

SPEAKER_01:

So yeah, and also with your with your team or the people that are you know directly accountable to you, um, you need to be sure, uh like in January. If you haven't done in December, uh in January, look at the goals, look at the timelines, the expectations, um, and and make sure that they're accountable. So I don't know how often you meet with your staff. Uh some of my staff I met with every week, some I've met with, you know, twice a month, some once a month. But uh they need to know what their expectations are, what their goals, what their timelines are, and uh then you know you hold them accountable, they hold you accountable for that, and um and it works it works out really, really well.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, 100%.

SPEAKER_01:

All right. Enough of leadership.

SPEAKER_03:

Enough of the leadership, right? Yeah. That's where you're where you're at.

SPEAKER_01:

So I you know, I was doing some show prep um uh for today, you know, getting some dad jokes done and stuff like that. And um my I was really confused at my office at the house because my printer started playing music. Yeah. It did, huh? Yeah, it turned out that my paper was jamming.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh boy, oh boy.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh I told you we were gonna give him some groaners, right?

SPEAKER_03:

We are, you know, we are gonna give them some groaners. So you know. I have to get back to some of my dad jokes here. You gotta get some dad jokes here. I was in work of work mode, like goal setting mode, so I gotta get back to look at some of my dad jokes.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, okay. Well, that's probably good. You know, let me ask you a question. What profession earns a living by driving their customers away?

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, that's a good one. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, what what profession makes a living by driving their customers away? A taxi driver.

SPEAKER_03:

All right, sort of uh we'll give you a half shout out. Hey, why the um um no, that's stupid. Never mind.

SPEAKER_01:

I think that was stupid. Oh my gosh, I went to look at it. I'm like, no, that's horrible. When you were growing up, you know, when I was growing up, my parents always fed me like alphabet soup, claiming that I liked it, but they were just putting words in my mouth.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_03:

I asked the gym if they're open on January 1st. They said I said they said yes. I said, see you next year.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh man, I need a button. I know. I know. There you go. You know, these are horrible. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03:

They gotta find some better ones real fast.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, you need to find some really good ones. Um, I'll let you borrow some. Anyway. So, you know, I'm thinking they should make an alarm clock. I don't know how many people you know, set an alarm clock, yeah, but a lot of people use their phone for alarm clock, you know, instead of like an old-fashioned clock alarm, they use their phone now, which is great. But I'm thinking that whoever makes phones, where it's Samsung or Google or Apple, they need to put an alarm there that sounds like a cat about to puke. Because nothing gets you out of bed faster than that.

SPEAKER_03:

I woke up last night to that sound, not for my cat, for my dog. Oh. My son's like, uh, dad. I'm like, I don't know. Flip the light on. Guess he just had a great belt or something, but boy, we were I was like looking around. I'm like, oh.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh my gosh. Oh, so speaking of dogs, where do dogs park their cars?

SPEAKER_03:

Dog park?

SPEAKER_01:

In a parking lot.

SPEAKER_03:

I like dog park, right? Yeah, dog park. Hey, why did Dracula pass out on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

Dracula pass out uh is out of blood? I don't know.

SPEAKER_03:

Ah, there was a countdown.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh my goodness. Okay, what do you call a bird that's afraid to fly?

SPEAKER_03:

Oh I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

A chicken.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_01:

That was pretty good, actually, but oh you know, did you hear about this? You know, there's a lot of weddings that happen. I did a lot of weddings when I was a pastor, and um, I haven't done a wedding for about a year and a half or so, but I always enjoyed it. But a lot of weddings on New Year's Eve. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's a very famous time to get married. So, did you hear about the two slices of bread that got married? Two slices of bread got married. You know, the wedding was amazing until someone decided to toast the bride and the groom.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice. I was thinking I was going with some kind of the jam or something. So well, that couldn't happen. You know, I I uh you know, New Year's we here in Dallas, we got a great New Year's. You know, they say that New Year's City has the best New Year's Eve celebration, uh, but I say it's overrated. Oh, yeah. You got it? You know it? You know it? No. Because every year they drop the ball.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, that's it. Okay. I think I've heard that one. Oh. Okay. Someone, you know, someone asked me, how do you weigh an elephant?

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, I know how to eat an elephant. Read that book. Yeah. One bite at a time, right? Yeah. Weigh an elephant.

SPEAKER_01:

How do you weigh an elephant? Don't know. It's like weighing a person, but on a much larger scale.

SPEAKER_03:

I sort of like that one. Um so the astronauts wanted to have a New Year's uh party on the space station. And but they didn't plan it in time.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, so what do you call two birds that stick together?

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, I've heard this one before, and I do not remember it. Velcrows.

SPEAKER_00:

Velcro is you know, I got fired from my job.

SPEAKER_01:

I was in college and I got a job as a masseuse, but I got fired. Apparently I rubbed the people the wrong way.

SPEAKER_03:

I got it. I like it.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, I like it. Okay, so what what do you got for me?

SPEAKER_03:

Me, I'm looking.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, so so when I was um in seminary, I got a a job and um uh and as a forklift driver in a refrigerated transport truck. Okay, yeah. We had to load the trucks by hand until we got our license to drive the forklift. And so I was telling my kids about it, and I told them about driving a forklift and and and uh my son said, Dad, what's a forklift? I said, normally food.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh. At the um at the beginning of the year, I was uh I made a resolution to lose 15 pounds.

SPEAKER_01:

You did?

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah. I only got 20 more to go. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

That's good. Okay. What kind of horse does a ghost ride?

SPEAKER_03:

Mmm. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

A nightmare.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice. Youth is when you're allowed to stay up late on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when you're forced to. Yeah, not that truth.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh. Yes, that is that is true. We you know, a lot of times we'll stay up until about nine.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

We usually uh we usually stay up. Um and or if we're traveling, a lot of times I'll set an alarm and wake up and uh we'll watch the the Dallas ball drop. Oh so sometimes I wake up everybody and they're grumpy, but they enjoy it. So no joke, just truth, true statement. True statement.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, here's the here we go. I don't know what people's you know favorite food is for New Year's, you know, New Year's Eve party. What's your favorite food? Maybe uh chips and salsa, burgers, you know, whatever. So, how did the burger propose to his girlfriend?

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

He used an onion ring.

SPEAKER_03:

I like it.

SPEAKER_01:

You like that one. Wow. Yeah, we're both struggling today.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, that's exactly right. Yeah we're uh we're pretty beat up in the studio here. I'm glad we're not here to spread all our good stuff here. So my eyes are over here watering and you know, blowing my nose and I'm hardly having a hard time talking.

SPEAKER_01:

Which some people really excite about when I lose my voice, you know. Oh okay, so what do you call a group of sweet potatoes playing music? Ooh.

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

A yam session. Nice.

SPEAKER_03:

What should uh why what should people never eat on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

You're already laughing. I don't know what.

SPEAKER_03:

So stupid. Firecrackers.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay. I'm just gonna let that one go. Yep, I'm just gonna let that go.

SPEAKER_03:

In what year? Now this is a a good one. In what year? Is this finally a good one? Is that what you're saying? What year did Christmas Day and New Year's Day fall in the same year?

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, you know, I think I've I've read this or heard it. Uh I think every year. Every year. Okay, so so um let's think.

SPEAKER_03:

Um last year I was able to keep all my New Year's resolutions.

SPEAKER_01:

You were?

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh. You know, um, one of these uh days, I think I'm gonna go to work at a muffler factory, but I've heard the work is exhausting.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice. You know, we had a lot more fun last year because we weren't just all like.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, I know.

SPEAKER_03:

We'll have to maybe we'll do two two year dad jokes, right? You know, do another one. So maybe some show.

SPEAKER_01:

I've got I you know, I just uh I've only got about two hundred more to go. So we you know, just just crank it up and we'll just keep going. Yeah. Yeah. Well you know I don't know how do you normally have a oh you got a good one there?

SPEAKER_03:

No, it's just a picture that showed up. It had a uh uh uh animal eating expected Chocolate chip, but it's an oatmeal raisin. You know, you take the wrong cookie. Even though I love oatmeal raisin, but you know, when you're talking about it.

SPEAKER_01:

You're expecting something put in your mouth. So I don't know how many people have other people over for like New Year's Eve parties, you know, New Year's Eve watch party. So, but I'm getting totally fed up with people whining about the price of things, you know,$2.50 for iced tea,$3.50 for coffee,$4 for a slice of cake,$5 to park the car. Anymore complaining, I'm gonna stop inviting people over.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, I have uh you know, trying to find those good ones.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, you know, I need to re-home a dog. Oh boy. Yeah. It's a small terrier.

SPEAKER_04:

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_01:

It tends to bark a lot. If you're interested, let me know and I'll jump over my neighbor's fence and get it for you.

SPEAKER_03:

Uh, what's a spider's New Year's resolution?

SPEAKER_01:

Oh. Spider's New Year's resolution.

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know what. To spend less time on the web.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, yes.

SPEAKER_03:

What do you tell someone you didn't see on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

What what say that again?

SPEAKER_03:

What do you tell someone you didn't see on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

Uh Happy New Year.

SPEAKER_03:

Haven't seen you for a year.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, that's it.

SPEAKER_03:

What does every New Year have in store for us?

SPEAKER_01:

New opportunities.

SPEAKER_03:

Hopefully another 365 days.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh good. So, um, you know, my therapist said I should get an emotional support animal. So I got myself a chicken. It was deep-fried and came with the milkshake. Nice. Yeah. Oh, you like that one, finally.

SPEAKER_03:

Meat eater here. Uh, why do you need a jeweler on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

Why do you need a jeweler on New Year's Eve? I probably have heard it. I don't know.

SPEAKER_03:

It's a ring in the New Year's Eve.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, that's it.

SPEAKER_03:

There's Firecracker one again.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, let's just see if we can come up with something.

SPEAKER_03:

So should we talk about goal setting a little bit more? Not to brag, but I already have a date for New Year's Eve. You do? I do. Yeah. It's December 31st.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh. Well.

SPEAKER_01:

Well.

SPEAKER_03:

Where do you go to do math homework on New Year's?

SPEAKER_01:

Where do you go to do math homework on New Year's? I don't know.

SPEAKER_03:

Times Square. Times Square.

SPEAKER_01:

You know, I put my grandma on speed dial. I call it Instagram.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice. That's actually good. I like that one. What was Dr. Frankenstein's New Year's resolution?

SPEAKER_01:

What was what?

SPEAKER_03:

What was Dr. Frankenstein's New Year's resolution?

SPEAKER_01:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_03:

To make new friends.

SPEAKER_01:

Whoever invented knock you remember knock-knock jokes?

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah. I love knock-knock jokes.

SPEAKER_01:

Whoever invented knock-knock jokes should get the Nobel Prize.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice. What does snowman like to do on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

I don't know. Chill out.

SPEAKER_02:

Chill out.

SPEAKER_01:

You know, a lot of people they they burn the candle at both ends, you know. They really do that. You've heard of pushing the envelope. Yeah. You know, but no matter how much you push the envelope, it's still stationary.

SPEAKER_03:

All right, I'll give you that one. Uh, what New Year's resolution should a basketball player never make?

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, I've heard this one. Yes. I don't remember.

unknown:

To travel more.

SPEAKER_01:

To travel more. That's it. Okay.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh. Okay. Well, let's think. Um. Let's think. What did you say?

SPEAKER_03:

What did the cat say on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

What did the cat say New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_03:

What did the cat say on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

Where's my dinner? Meow. Meow.

SPEAKER_03:

Not like a cat can talk, Posey. Come on. That's it. Why do birds fly south for New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

Why do they birds fly south for New Year's Eve? I don't know.

SPEAKER_03:

That's too far to walk.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, that's probably it. You know, running into stationary objects can be painful. That's according to a recent poll.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice. Oh. No. No.

SPEAKER_01:

You know, um, when I was over here, uh coming over here, I needed to get some uh money out of the ATM. And uh so there at the bank we use there's three ATM machines right there by the drive-thru.

SPEAKER_04:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

And so I saw a man at the other one of the ATMs standing, standing on one leg. And I and I rolled down my window and I I was confused. So I asked him what he was doing. He said, I'm just checking my balance.

SPEAKER_04:

I'll give it to you.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh, yes.

SPEAKER_03:

Well I was gonna quit all my bad habits for the new year. But then I remember nobody likes a quitter.

SPEAKER_02:

Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_01:

What do cows like to read?

SPEAKER_03:

Oh something moo. Catalogs. Catalogs.

SPEAKER_02:

Catalogs, yes.

SPEAKER_01:

So what do British sea monsters eat?

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

Fish and ships.

SPEAKER_03:

What's the best New Year's resolution?

SPEAKER_02:

To uh I don't know.

SPEAKER_03:

4K. Ten ADP, 4K.

SPEAKER_01:

Um So why did the pie go to the dentist?

SPEAKER_03:

To get a filling.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, exactly right. Very good job. I'm right, you got it.

SPEAKER_03:

My New Year's resolution is to break my New Year's resolutions. That way I succeed at something. What happened to the man who shoplifted a calendar on New Year's Eve?

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, I've heard this one. I don't remember.

SPEAKER_03:

He got 12 months.

SPEAKER_01:

He got 12 months. Okay. What did the beach say when the tide came in?

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

A long time no sea.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice. What a little bottle. What did the little champagne bottle call his father? What did the the little champagne bottle call his father?

SPEAKER_01:

Pop. Okay, what kind of music do they play at a Chinese restaurant?

SPEAKER_03:

Uh I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

Walk and roll. Rock and roll. Walk and roll. So what was the frog's job at the hotel?

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know. It was a bell hop. Nice.

SPEAKER_01:

What do cakes shout out at the start of every baseball game? What does a cake shout out at the start of every baseball game?

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

Batter up.

SPEAKER_03:

Oh, nice. I went a different direction on it.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, so what do you get when you play tuga war with a pig? I have not, I don't think I've ever got you laughing in a dad joke. What do you get when you play Tug of War with a pig?

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know. Pull pork.

SPEAKER_01:

I got two. Wow, that was really good. Just started laughing. You just started laughing at that one.

SPEAKER_03:

I stayed up all night wondering where the sun went. Then it dawned on you.

SPEAKER_02:

Then it dawned on you.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh walking down the street, I saw a sign that said, Watch repairs here. I stood there for 30 minutes and never saw one.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice.

SPEAKER_01:

Okay, so what did the horse say when it fell down?

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know. What did the horse say?

SPEAKER_01:

Remember the remember the what was the um the commercial, I'm falling and I can't get up? So the horse said, I'm falling and I can't giddy up. So what did the you know it's it's been windy here in Dallas Fort Worth area lately? What did the tree say to the wind?

SPEAKER_03:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01:

Leave me alone.

SPEAKER_03:

My goal this year is to set realistic goals. So far I'm undefeated.

SPEAKER_01:

So why do cats make such terrible storytellers? Why do cats make such terrible storytellers? I don't know. Because they only have one tail.

SPEAKER_03:

Nice.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, you know what?

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

I don't know.

SPEAKER_03:

Well, let's do uh some closing on some goal setting. What do you think?

SPEAKER_01:

That I think that's a great idea.

SPEAKER_03:

If anybody's still listening.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. Well, you know, we've been here about 30 minutes. So we have been here about 30 minutes. So goal setting.

SPEAKER_03:

So here's some do's. Do anchor goals to purpose. So goals without purpose become pressure, right? Um strong leaders connect goals to why they matter. Um in scripture, vision always precedes action.

SPEAKER_01:

Exactly right. Vision is so important. Right. And the the Bible says um that without a vision, the people perish. And so you need a vision. And uh if you don't have that for your company or your organization, that would be good. You know, your vision, a mission. So yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

And that's this question: why does this goal matter to me, my team, and my mission? And then uh one of the things that you need to do on this one, focus on progress, not perfection. This is the one that I I'm I'm working hard on this year. Because I I like perfection. I'm not a perfectionist, but there's business-wise, I'm a perfectionist. But I always procrastinate and not do it because I'm not ready in my mind to do it. It's not ready to be perfect. And I'm I'm working on that. That's one of my biggest goals this year is to focus on progress.

SPEAKER_01:

So let's go back to your first statement about goals. Okay. So let's think you have a goal, whatever it may be. Um I I always like to say, what's the outcome objective of that goal? So, you know, if if that goal got accomplished within the next six months or a year, what is that gonna look like? And do we are we ready for that goal to be met? I mean, do are are we ramping up our production? Are we thinking about the future? I mean, are we if this goal is met, are we gonna be ready to hire another person? Are we gonna have to expand our warehouse? Um so you don't want to get accomplish a goal and then just be stationary or be caught off guard because you've accomplished the goal and not ready for the next step. So you have to think more than just one goal at a time. You have to think, okay, if we meet this goal, that outcome objective, then what's gonna be the natural progress to the next thing? Now, the next goal, the first goal might take six months, it might take a year, it might take two years, but then it's like, okay, then we're gonna do this. Okay.

SPEAKER_04:

Right.

SPEAKER_01:

And so you've got to think more than just, you know, one thing at a time. You gotta think long term. And I think leaders have the ability to think that way, not uh like you want to just step out and do it so fast that you don't do quality, but you can't just think one thing at a time and think, oh, we're done, because that might set you up for success in the next segment or the next phase of your business. And you're thinking, oh, we're not prepared for that. So um just be thinking, you know, far in advance, not just close up.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, exactly. Right. And that ties into my next one I had set fewer goals, execute better, right? Um clarity outperf outperforms volume. Um rule of thumb is one to three major goals per quarter. And if you accomplish them, reset some goals. But if you focus on those goals, it's sort of like the old thing, you know, we talk about the big rocks, you know, the big rocks. What are your big rocks as far as goal setting? Yeah. What are those ones that you really want to accomplish? Because I mean, if you hit your big rocks, you accomplish them. You know, some of your big rocks can't be accomplished in the first quarter. They're they're long-term plays, but if you're still working on those, number one, then uh then you know, it allows you to uh uh execute better, to focus on them, to have more clarity on how to accomplish them.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah. And so the one of the things that we did uh and and a lot of people do this, but it's just a a good reminder. So if your goal is to say, uh we want to have this done by next October 31st, okay? Uh we close out our fiscal year or whatever, we want to do it before the holidays, so we want to get it done by November 30th, then then I would always backdate my my strategies and my principle, you know, my my goal settings. So I would say, okay, if we're gonna do this, then this has to be done by August 31st, this has to be done by June 1st, this has to be done by April 1st. And so you can't just project a goal out there and have no strategy, right? So you've got to think about what am I gonna do tomorrow or next month or whatever to get that goal done by November. So that's just uh important thing to remember. And then what am I gonna do tomorrow? What am I gonna do the next day to reach that goal? And so many times we get uh distracted by minor things, you know, uh phone calls, emails, social media, all that kind of stuff. And that takes away from our focus and our time on goals. And so um, you know, put first things first. I Stephen Covey, still still remember that. Put first things first. Get those goals done, you know, and um which ties into exactly what I was gonna say in my first one.

SPEAKER_03:

Translate goals into daily behaviors, right?

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, exactly. Right.

SPEAKER_03:

You know, what must I do weekly to make this goal inevitable to come true, right? And and you know, one of the biggest things that I have, um, you know, um I've got a little picture, but I'm actually in the process of making a big picture. Um I'm working on a signed company right now, another venture that I've got. I'm working on a signed company, but I'm gonna make a big one that says systems, because that's one of the biggest things that I think leaders need to have in place is systems. Once you get a system, systems you're able to hold yourself accountable if you're not uh going through those systems, and those systems allow you to uh pre-plan out like from daily to weekly to monthly, and if you have the systems in place, it just helps you uh be more successful.

SPEAKER_01:

So Yeah. And then if you have um a way to hold yourself accountable or have someone else hold you accountable.

SPEAKER_03:

I swear. Yeah, everyone you set the last three or four up spot on. We're we are synced in.

SPEAKER_01:

Like, we are synced in, even though we're not feeling well, we're synced into that. That's really good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

But yeah, build accountability in the goal. Um what gets measured gets managed, right? That's the truth. Who knows this goal and will it hold to me, right? You know, um uh you know, biblical leadership emphasizes stewardship and responsibility, you know.

SPEAKER_01:

Exactly correct. Exactly right. So and uh and then uh the the thing that I've found um in my own life and in in work is that sometimes we try to do too much too quick. And I think what you said a while ago was so it's so important to focus on something and do one or two things really, really well, yeah, then a bunch of things poorly. And um you don't want to you just you don't want to just fail from the beginning. Right, you know, it's like showing up to the gym, like you said, you know. Um I try to go to the gym two or three times a week. Um and uh it's just consistency. So I know starting next week there's gonna be a lot of people there. A lot of people, March, there's gonna be about half of them. So, you know, it's consistency, and don't try to do too much, or these people that haven't worked out in 10 years who go out and try to lift a lot of weight and they get hurt, you know. It's like, no, just start out small, build momentum, and uh accomplish your goal, whatever that goal may be.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, 100%.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

All right.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, had a good year. Yeah, had a great year with you, Dr. B.

SPEAKER_03:

So we're gonna come back and uh hang out on January 6th to be our next show. We'll be back in studio and hopefully we'll get rid of our cold and our bronchitis and be feeling much better. But uh, I'll do a closing thought. You know, the the Bible does not treat new beginnings as calendar events, it treats them as leadership moments. Renewal happens when leaders realign their thinking, release what no longer serves the mission, and move forward in obedience, courage, and consistency. And then my favorite line the new year does not bring uh the new year does not change leaders. Leadership changes how the new year is lived. Uh so I mean take what you have, become a leader that you want to be this next year, and um you know Why don't you repeat that?

SPEAKER_01:

That's really a good statement.

SPEAKER_03:

The new year doesn't change leaders, leadership changes. How the new year is lived. So, in other words, reset your goals, reset some things. Get off where you're not procrastinating. Don't let perfection get in your way. Don't let procrastination get in your way. Get out there, make it happen from day one. You know, if you're waiting through the holidays, I know there's a whole bunch of stuff that I have that I have, but I mean, next couple weeks is next week is is crazy. And uh I'm I'm excited about the week after, about you know, kicking it out. And uh January is is I'm ready to go. I've I've got everything set up in December, November, December. I've been working on setting everything up and I'm ready to go, you know, January 3rd, 4th.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, so let's just say one last thing. In order to make the new year, it's really important that you evaluate what you did and didn't do last year and have an honest evaluation because some things, you know, like let's go back to COVID, even though that's been several years um ago. Uh some things we can control.

SPEAKER_03:

Yes.

SPEAKER_01:

You know, our actions, our decisions, but there's some things we can't control. So let's just do an honest evaluation of what happened last year and say, you know what, we over-projected or we underprojected, or you know, we just didn't do this right. And the more honest you can be about your own self-evaluation, the better you're gonna make your goal setting and goal performance for the next year.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

So I like it. I've enjoyed it. Uh for those of you who are just joining us uh today for the first time, thank you so much. Yeah, 100%.
