Ever wonder why one public compliment can shift an entire team’s energy? We open with a simple swimming lesson that becomes a metaphor for growth, then dive into Colossians to map a clear path for mission-first leadership. From Paul’s praise of Epaphras to his sweeping picture of Christ’s supremacy, we connect theology to the everyday choices leaders make: what to celebrate, what to resist, and what to repeat until it sticks.

We break down how a strong center prevents drift, why maturity shows up as the ability to teach others, and how counterfeit spirituality sneaks into organizations as rule-worship, elitism, or optics over outcomes. You’ll hear practical ways to hardwire focus—mission cards, meeting rituals, and clear definitions of done—so your team aligns faster and avoids decision fatigue. We also tackle the quiet damage of ego and insecurity: micromanagement, shifting expectations, and reactivity. With real-world tactics for building trust, giving grounded feedback, and choosing the right moment for hard conversations, we aim to make courage a habit, not a mood.

Throughout, we keep the tone light with rapid-fire dad jokes and vivid stories, but the throughline stays steady: encouragement is a leadership discipline, identity shapes culture, and resilience grows when the mission is more than a motto. If you’re leading a business, a church, or a small team, you’ll leave with concrete tools to praise in public, coach for growth, and stay kindly stubborn under criticism.

If this helped you refocus on your North Star, subscribe, share it with a friend, and drop us your favorite dad joke or one public compliment you’ll give today. Your story might show up in a future episode.

SPEAKER_01

Oh now yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Alrighty, welcome, welcome, welcome.

SPEAKER_02

Hey Tim, how are you doing today?

SPEAKER_00

What's up, Dr.

SPEAKER_02

P? Well, I'm just trying to get over uh swimming this morning.

SPEAKER_00

Dr. Posey might have to go to the restroom by halfway through because he drank about a gallon and a half of water in the pool this morning.

SPEAKER_02

So well, I was telling Tim before we started that uh I I'm enjoying the swim. It's a challenge, you know. If you want to do grow in some way, just go challenge yourself to do something that you've never done, or maybe you've never done well and you're trying to improve. So I'm at I'm swimming a couple of times a week and under a coach who's a phenomenal coach. Swam in college, had been coaching for 25 years. Really, really a great guy. Um, and and you know, I didn't swim a whole lot. I was growing up a little bit at the YMCA, you know, swam a little bit. But I probably didn't swim from the time I was maybe fifth, sixth grade until about two years ago. I just didn't swim very much. I swam some when I hurt my back, but that's been a long, long time ago. So this coach um is and I normally breathe on the right side. Like most people. My well, some people, you know, a lot of people. Anyway, so he's encouraged me to learn to breathe on both sides. That's correct. Okay, because he says, hey, if you're swimming in a lake, like for a triathlon, uh, if if you're swimming in a pool, it's not a problem. But if you're swimming in a lake, you don't know if the wind's gonna be blowing on one side and you breathe on that side, then then you're gonna swallow water every time. So you've got to learn to swim, breathe on both sides. Which is totally, totally makes sense. It makes so much sense, you know, but I've never done that. So I'm trying the last couple of weeks, trying to take it real slow, learn to do it. And like I was telling Tim before we started, I only swallowed about a gallon of water today, you know, which was better. Last week was a two gallons. So I am improving slowly. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, still got a ways to go.

SPEAKER_02

I I have a long ways to go, but that's okay. You know, that's what you do. That I want to get better, and I'm never gonna be fast.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I just want to be efficient. And so if I'm in a triathlon and I, you know, the a swim 1500 meters or whatever it is, um, I don't want to be exhausted when I get out of the water. You know, you gotta you gotta swim, then you bike, and then you run. So if you're exhausted when you get out of the water because you're not breathing well, okay, then the rest of the triathlon, you're just gonna be exhausted. And so that's not good. So I am trying to think, okay, how can I get better swimming, not be exhausted? And a big part of that for me is my breathing, okay? And so slowly learning. And uh, it's hard to break something that you've been doing wrong your whole life. You know, it's just hard. It's just hard. Um, but anyway, um, let's let's get on with the story. Let's get on with why we're here. Hey, welcome to the Biblical Leadership Show podcast. And I am Dr. Dean Posey. With me is Tim Lansford. That's me. And um, yeah, and so we are um this is uh podcast number 111. Yeah, and uh for those of you who are joining us for the first time, welcome. Um we have been going through the Bible for um almost over a year and a half now, and uh looking at every book of the Bible. Sometimes we do it in one week for a book, like today. We're gonna go through the book of Colossians, um, and other times it takes us several weeks to go through a book. But uh what we do is look at those uh the content of each book and talk about the leadership principles that we see in every book that you can literally start applying to your life today. And um and so in in and then we throw in some dad jokes, you know, just because we can just because we can. Just because we can. We can. Yeah, we can. It's our show and we love it. And uh we enjoy being here. So thank you for joining with us. Uh tell your friends about the biblical leadership show. We really appreciate the uh sharing.

SPEAKER_00

I would say uh wonder if anybody's listening, because we have a lot of people who are listeners. Are are they listening because of dad do dad jokes or the content? I'm like, I don't know. Our dad jokes pretty, pretty uh you know, socks. I've got some good ones today. Oh, you got some good ones today? All right.

SPEAKER_02

I got some good ones today. So but let's get to Colossians. Um Colossians, um, you know, it's uh about the middle of the uh New Testament and written by Paul. And um and so it's four chapters. Um I I found it fascinating that um the the if you were to outline the book of Colossians, it's gonna be very similar to some other books that Paul wrote, not necessarily in content, but in outline.

SPEAKER_00

They are pretty similar in structure, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, in structure. That's a good word. Um and so um if you haven't uh heard that before from us, the structure would be that Paul lays out a theological foundation. Uh Colossians only four chapters, but first couple of chapters, he lays down a theological foundation um uh for the church. Now he's writing to Colossae, uh church that he did not start. He's never seen these people. He has uh a man from there, named Epaphras, that's how I pronounce it, um, come share. He's writing the church to encourage them.

SPEAKER_00

And he's still in prison when he's still in prison, yeah. He's writing these and he's got messengers delivering them, I reckon.

SPEAKER_02

Correct. And so he hears about it from this man and he writes to the church. Um, and he lays down uh two basic principles. I mean, the first part of the book is a theological foundation, which is true for almost every book that Paul wrote uh or letter that he wrote. And then the second part of the book, not necessarily half, but the second part, is how do you apply that theological foundation to your everyday life? Um and so now I find it fascinating right in the middle of the first chapter, really, even at the beginning of the first chapter, uh, chapter one, verse seven, that um he is complimenting this man, Epaphras, to the people that knew him. Um, and he's just encouraged them. He says this just as you learned it from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant, he is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf and has made known to us your love in the spirit. And so what I see from that um is it is so important to encourage other people. Yes, we focus on we've talked about the the the importance of focusing on the mission. And to me, if you take uh Paul's theological writings at the beginning of of the Colos the Book of Colossi of Colossians, the whole first couple of chapters, he's uh he's regrounding them in um the foundation of of Christ. And he's talking about why Christ is supreme. Um there is some obviously some temptation from the outside forces of the church to uh downplay the importance of Christ, to look at other uh foundations, and Paul's saying no, he is the one, he is the focus. But in the midst of that, he's also seeing the importance of complimenting and encouraging publicly uh his co-workers. And um, so I have this quote that I wanted to share from Zig Ziggler. I uh Zig Ziggler was just a phenomenal leader, teacher, businessman, but he said this far too many people have no idea of what they can do because all they have been told is what they can't do.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, nice.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'm gonna say that again. Far too many people have no idea what they can do because all they have been told is what they can't do. And so I think Paul is here, he's trying to flip that on his head and say, No, um, I'm not gonna talk about what this man can't do. He came all the way, he found me, came to prison, he brought this information for me. I am gonna compliment him. And so for those of you who are listening um today, I appreciate it. But I'm gonna say, make it a point every day to compliment publicly at least one person. Yeah, yeah, at least one. Uh and now it could take a lot. No, it doesn't take a lot, but it could be um you you have a mom and pop sandwich shop, okay? It's just you and your spouse, you run this sandwich shop. Um, compliment your customers. Hey, thank you so much for you know supporting us. I really appreciate it. Just think about how can I lift up someone else in public um and and and just compliment them, encourage them and support them. Uh I bet you make their day if you do that. Yes, you can write a note and no one else might see it, but if you do it in public, it makes such a huge impact on other people.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And you know, there's a lot of stuff. It's like, well, I don't have an opportunity. You can always have a chance to compliment somebody. It could be clothes they wear, kindness of the kids. We get we get it from our kids all the time. People are complimenting our kids. There's little things like that that go a long way.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So I just tell you, uh, the other day, well, it's been a couple weeks, I guess. Um, you know, when we had that big ice storm in here in the Dallas Forth area, and I went to the grocery store be the day before it hit. Well, there was like you thought it was the day after Thanksgiving, okay? And I didn't need that much, but I had to park like at the other end of the parking lot. And um, I'm walking through the uh through the parking lot, um, and you know, I'm thinking, okay, I I just need to get a basket. I don't need that many things, you know, just to just to you know stock up. And and uh this woman is out there in the parking lot unloading her her stuff into the car. And she says uh to me, sir, there are no shopping carts in the store. Would you like this one? And I said, Thank you so much. That really is nice of you. Thank you so much. And um and I took it and I said, You have a great day. And I'm just thinking, you know, something as simple as that. I think what it is, is you've got to develop it as a habit. You know, it's a habit.

SPEAKER_00

You might think it, but to actually say it how many times do people think it and they don't do it?

SPEAKER_02

Just say it. So Paul is saying writing it down. I mean, he wrote this letter, you know, like 2,000 years ago, and we still read it today. And so, so it's like that was so important for Paul to encourage and compliment people. Um and here's another one that I I thought would be perfect. Great leaders don't show you their superpowers. You know, we're talking about superpowers, superheroes, all those. So great leaders don't show you their superpowers, they show you yours. And so, you know, it's it's like, how can I lift someone else up? How can I compliment them on one of their strengths or what they're doing well? And so, right here at the beginning of the letter, Paul is uh complimenting this person. He went all the way from where he was to Paul, found him in prison. He's complimenting in front of the entire church because this letter is going to be taken back to the church and read out loud. And um, and so I just like take um the opportunity at least once every day um to compliment somebody, to encourage them, to compliment their strengths. Um I I that it will literally make their day.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then and it'll give them a lot of confidence going forward to maybe pass that on. You know, it's like that. We we always talk about pay it forward and and what you can do, and and one small act tends to lead into another small act and so on and so forth, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, exactly. Correct. Exactly. So so um uh that is just the beginning of the of the letter of uh Colossians, and um, and so he Paul um has uh just amazing uh he has just an amazing mind, an incredible gift of language. And um so beginning um about verse 15, chapter one, verse 15, he goes into this incredible description of Jesus Christ, um talking about who he is, who he was, what he did, um how he's you know he's God, and uh he says he's the image of the invisible God. Uh I mean he just goes on and on and on. And and to me, what he's doing is he's trying to ground these people in the mission. And so, you know, I I think that we've said this a lot. Uh it's so important to focus on the mission of whatever your organization is. It's so easy to get distracted, you know, it's so easy to get distracted from your purpose, your mission, your goals. And um, you know, so uh Paul's just really, really good at that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I like the second part of that where it talks about that he's the um the um firstborn of every creature. I thought that was sort of a powerful statement on the second part of that verse.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's a very powerful statement. It's a very powerful statement. Yeah, so so Paul's basically saying that Christ must have first place in everything.

SPEAKER_00

It's spiritual um posturing, basically.

SPEAKER_02

So yes, exactly correct. And so um that is like okay, what is primary for you? Um if you're a Christian, obviously it's Christ, but it's like in your business. What is primary? Yeah, your North Star. Yeah, that's a good question. What's your North Star? What's your North Star? You gotta keep focused on that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_02

Keep focused, focused, focused on that. And um, and so that is uh Paul starts out that letter, um, and uh he is just encouraging people because he wants them not just to know about it intellectually, he wants them to grow in their faith, he wants them to be mature. Uh, and the more mature we are um in our faith, uh the possibility is we're less distracted and less willing to compromise. And so that's what he is uh encouraging people to do that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, 100%. And then on 128, there he gets into um where he's talking about uh you know, leadership is is not about dependence, it's about uh um help helping them grow up without constant hand holding uh is the way I interpret that from uh from that verse.

SPEAKER_02

So and that verse you know, everybody to be mature.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he talks about teaching all men and wisdom that we may present every man perfect in Christ. He talks about, you know, how can they evolve on themselves, wants them to grow and continue to grow.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, and I would say just because of what Paul wrote in other letters, you don't just want to grow to grow. You want to grow so you can actually begin to teach others. Um and so the the uh question is, and I've learned this from myself, is I learn a lot more when I am teaching someone else. Um and oh yeah, yeah, right?

SPEAKER_00

I say it all the time, and my my thing, I I learn it is not that I learn, even though I teach a lot of this stuff for for a living and I know a lot of this stuff, I don't always put it in practice. As soon as I teach it, I'm like, I haven't been doing that. Yeah, and I need to concentrate on that. So you always learn something, you always go back and and you learn from the audience. There's always some angle or something I didn't think about, but a lot of times I just get that refresher is like I haven't done anything with that information for for six months. I need to get going on that.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah. And so we go to chapter two, and um, and so those um he kind of continues um with that theme of the theological um uh foundation, but he there's a warning there um because uh he is you know he's talking to a a church that's in a predominantly Roman culture. There is um all kinds of outward influences, um, and and they are can be very, very strong. And and Paul is trying to say, hey, you need to continue in your faith, you need to continue staying close to Christ. Um you need to be rooted in that, you need to be built up in that, you need to hold fast to that. Yeah, um and it's easy to be able to do it.

SPEAKER_00

Everything's incomplete, right? You know, and he sort of said it as a warning, I guess, in a way, right? Just sort of you everything you need is right here.

SPEAKER_02

Correct. Yeah, correct. Um, and he also talks about it almost a counterfeit spirituality, yeah. Um, you know, false humility, uh spiritual elitism, um, rule-based approaches, those kind of things that people can get really hung up on. Um, that's really not the focus. Um and uh, you know, I it's it's sometimes um people can look, you know, like they're they're a rule keeper and they feel like they're holier than thou or whatever, like that. And and Paul's saying, no, that's not growing, that's not maturity. You know, that isn't that's almost like a counterfeit spirituality. Yeah, so you need to you need to um um watch out for that. We're gonna be sucked into it real easy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then you know, one of the things on that you talk about humility is is you know the false humility, you know, that ego that gets out. Yeah, there's so many people that I see their ego sort of run and and uh take them in different paths where they really shouldn't go.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, ego can really be destructive. You know, and a lot of times people that have ego, uh big ego, don't recognize it. Uh other people do. They uh they see the destruction that it causes when you're self-centered and you think about yourself more than the organization. Um it can be, and and it's you know, if you work with somebody like that and um or or maybe your boss is that way, or one of your employees is that that way, it's it's hard to it's tough to address it. Yeah. It really is tough to address it. And so so uh And a lot of times I don't listen.

SPEAKER_00

I've got friends that I've I've addressed the ego many, many, many, many times, and it it doesn't uh it doesn't sink, you know. It it might soften the ego a little bit, but the ego definitely is still very prominent in uh a few of my clients and stuff, coaching clients.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and so think about uh ego, big ego. Sometimes a big ego is a sign of of like uh insecurity.

SPEAKER_00

Insecurities, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and sometimes insecurity produces micromanagement. Um it can produce uh shifting expectations. Um and so if you have um, you know, politics, favoritism, um uh insecurity sometimes produces uh emotional reactivity. Um and so if you're if you work with someone like that, maybe your boss is that way or whatever, um, I would just say you've gotta pray about it. You've got to know how I can address that. Um and sometimes you feel like I can't address it because if I address it and am honest and truthful, I'm gonna lose my job.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yes, that happens, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And so you've got to think, how am I gonna address it? And and I would just pray that I would encourage you to just pray for wisdom and an opportunity. Um maybe during your annual review uh or your quarterly review or whatever, um you you might uh you know take the risk and bring some of that up. I wouldn't bring it all up at one time, I'd bring up maybe one. One thing. Um, and if you have not developed a good relationship with that person, I would say that's what you have to work on first. You got to work on building a solid relationship with that person. Uh not to not to you know it's like uh butter them up or anything like that, but um you don't want to go in a a potential conflictual conversation uh with hostility, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And and then that sort of leads into what chapter three was, you know, you know, build that Christ-centered culture, you know, and and make sure you're putting all that in place. Because I mean that's that's the part of the transfer transformation, you know, and and I think that's where he sort of wanted to go is like, you know, what what do you what do you see as your identity now? You know, can you leave that old identity, that ego, and move the thing that's uh Christ-centered, you know, get rid of the old idols and and everything that you might have and and put it in place.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. Um and so the um one of the things that I wanted to share is is going back to chapter one, but also I think it comes into chapter three, and that is your image, you know, um your your how do you come across to other people? Um and if you if you start going back to chapter one, if you're if you're gonna compliment somebody and and they uh maybe they're feeling insecure, maybe they're self-doubting, they just don't feel comfortable, but maybe you know, they don't know if they're doing a good job, and you start complimenting them, you know, it's amazing when their image improves of themselves, their performance will improve.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And and so Paul, I think, is addressing this in in his letter in chapter three specifically. He's talking about you stay grounded in Christ, you have your identity in Christ, um, and you you have that secure identity, you know who you are, you know whose you are. Um your whole whose you are. Who's you are, right? I like it. Um, and and so your whole uh life is going to take on a different meaning because you have confidence um in Christ. Um, you have that solid relationship, you're growing in that, uh, you have that foundation, and you are doing your best to live out those biblical principles in your daily life. So once you begin to realize your identity um in Christ, um that has a high potential of in just improving your overall outlook in life.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um Yeah, there you go. There you there you go. I was sitting there seeing if I was gonna add anything, but really you covered it. I could I could add a few leadership things, but you you you did pretty good on that.

SPEAKER_02

Well, then you know, chapter three and chapter four really you have this foundation. Uh, and and we would say in in the business stance, you focus on your mission. Okay, so you you're in a board meeting, you're in a staff meeting, whatever. You talk about here's our mission. Um I was a part of a church one time that at every staff meeting, um, they would repeat the mission of the church.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Every staff meeting. I think it's great. And and it would just be, and they had a little card everybody kept in their wallet, and they would and they would just repeat it. A lot of people didn't have to re have to pull out the card because they knew it. And it's like, okay, so that's what Paul is hammering in the first couple of chapters. And then he's saying, okay, if this is our mission, if if we're all about Christ, if we're all about lifting Christ up and having him supreme and having him in every part of our life, how do we live that out in a culture that is so anti-Christian? I can't think of a better thing than it's going on today because so much of our culture around the world is so anti-Christian. And so it's like, no, I'm gonna, I'm gonna live out my Christian faith. There are gonna be some consequences to that. Okay. Um, I might be looked at, you know, differently, I might be talked down to, I'm whatever. But we Paul is trying to encourage us to not let the culture around us define what's in us. And and so uh I think that was a challenge back then. I think it might have been even a bigger challenge back then than it is for us here. Um, but for some people around the world, it is a huge challenge. They are they're really living their faith out every day.

SPEAKER_00

And I think you make a good point about the vision and and the cards, because I I teach a lot of military, and a lot of the military have the general's vision printed out on a little card, and they keep it with them under their hat, in their little pocket, or whatever, and they they look at it all the time to make sure that they they have that down. Uh and and a lot of corporate people they print them out on cards and then have everybody keep them on the wallet or their desk or in their cubicles so they can see them every day. I think it's a brilliant idea that that everybody needs to incorporate it from a business.

SPEAKER_02

So uh here's another quote from Zig Ziegler. I I just like the guy. I mean, he's he's he's a he's an amazing guy. But here's here's another one. This is what Zig said. Don't be distracted by criticism. And that's I think what Paul's saying here. You're gonna have kind of culture, you're gonna have criticism of your faith, you're gonna have criticism of your lifestyle, you're gonna have criticism about a bunch of things if you're a Christian. Don't be distracted by criticism. Remember, the only taste of success some people have is when they take a bite out of you. I thought, wow, that's really nice, Dig. Thank you so much for that uh for that quote. That's really, really smart. Nice, yes. Um, that's good. So let's just uh, you know, let's maybe turn transition into some really good, you know, dad jokes.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I don't know that we have any dad jokes today.

SPEAKER_02

Well, you know, there was I re read a recent survey um that found out that six out of seven dwarfs aren't happy.

SPEAKER_00

I'm finding my button over here.

SPEAKER_02

Oh okay. What kind of bee drops things?

SPEAKER_00

Oh.

SPEAKER_02

What kind of bee drops things?

SPEAKER_00

Uh it shouldn't be that hard, but apparently A fumble bee. Fumblebee. I wouldn't have got that one. Going a whole different direction. So I was like, no, I wouldn't have.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, what do you call a bee that lives in America?

SPEAKER_00

A bee that lives in America.

SPEAKER_01

A USB got a chair. I like that one.

SPEAKER_02

So why is it so much easier to weigh fish than to weigh chickens?

SPEAKER_00

Uh scale.

SPEAKER_02

Because fish have their own scales. Very good. That's awesome. Yeah. So let's see, what else we got here? Okay. You know, I I like to sing. I'm not I'm not a great singer, but I I like singing. But when I'm in my car, I only sing in reverse. I'm a backup singer.

SPEAKER_00

What do you call a bundle of hay in a church?

SPEAKER_02

Hay bale?

SPEAKER_00

Christian bale.

SPEAKER_02

Oh. Oh. Okay, so you know, uh my uh my let's just say my ancestors homesteaded in southern New Mexico. And had a house and had a big barn. Um, and uh, you know, they could never get good Wi-Fi reception in the house on the farm.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_02

So they moved it to the barn and now they have a stable connection.

SPEAKER_00

It's like that one where uh from the Super Bowl a couple weeks ago where they, you know, uh I always you probably didn't see it, is uh on the Super Bowl they had uh Jurassic Park and they said uh you know it went there and they had all the the actors and things were going wrong and all this. And the um infinity internet guy showed up and go, here's the problem, you should have plugged this cable in. It went boop, boop, boop, boop. Everything's online, and oh yeah, this is a great place, you know. And nothing happened, right? They just took their tour and went hanging out with the animals and and uh they fixed it just because that cable needed to be plugged in. So it's simple, right? Reboot.

SPEAKER_02

Reboot. Um okay. I finished a book the other day about a detective who cracks crimes entirely by chance. Nice name is Sherlock Holmes.

SPEAKER_00

Sherlock Holmes, nice.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, so if you're listening, which I hope you are, and you obviously can tell that we need some serious dad jokes, please send them to us. Please. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. All right, give me one more. You got one.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, I I was washing my car uh the other day with our son.

SPEAKER_00

It's on my list of to-dos for the day.

SPEAKER_02

It is. Well, the neighbor suggested a sponge might be more effective.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, maybe so.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Alrighty, guys. He's looking. I was gonna cut him off, but he's he's he's got that look where he has to do one more. I've got one more. I I see this look in his eyes.

SPEAKER_02
