The Biblical Leadership Show
From Milk To Steak The Leadership Diet-
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Some leaders hesitate because the task is too big. More often, they hesitate because something inside feels too heavy: fear of failure, shaky confidence, or the quiet worry that they are not ready. We take Hebrews 5 and put it right on the ground where leadership actually happens, connecting spiritual maturity to the daily decisions leaders make at work, at home, and on teams.
We talk about what it looks like when people want the benefits of leadership but avoid the sacrifice it requires, and why repeating the basics is not the same as building on a foundation. Hebrews 5 gives us a sharp picture: milk is for infants, but solid food is for the mature, and maturity comes through constant practice. That becomes a practical leadership development challenge: train discernment, seek wise input, and choose growth on purpose instead of drifting.
We also dig into authority and humility. Jesus is appointed rather than self-appointed, and that frames leadership as stewardship, not ego. We unpack why insecure leaders feel the need to control, announce themselves, or delay hard decisions, and why healthy leaders invite feedback, learn fast, and stay steady when pressure hits.
If you want Christian leadership that is practical, honest, and workable, hit play, then share this with a leader who needs a push toward maturity. Subscribe, leave a review, and visit biblical leadership show.com to send us your dad jokes or a prayer request.
Welcome And Life Updates
Alrighty, welcome. Welcome. And uh welcome. Hey Tim, how you doing? How are we doing today, Dr. P? I am doing fantastic. How you doing? Spectacular. Yeah. Had a good swim this morning before I came into the studio. So yeah, it was good. It was really good. I mean, I mean, you're you're just getting up there. Getting up there. Yeah. 2,000 meters today. So yeah. 2,000 more than me. Yeah, but it was tough, but it was good. It was a really good swim. So I am happy for you to get up. I I was running around all morning and I did not make it to the gym. So I'm gonna have to fit that in this evening. So well, you know, you gotta sometimes you just gotta catch up on stuff, right? I have to do a double tomorrow. I just thought about my evenings tonight's basketball. So might have to do a double workout tomorrow. Oh my goodness. Okay, that means working double means working both arms. Uh-oh. That's exactly right. Okay. How did you know? Oh gosh. Well, welcome to the Biblical Leadership Show. I am Dr. Dean Posey with and with me is Tim Lansford. Hey, so thank you for joining us, especially if this is your very first time. This is episode 122. Yes. And uh for those of you who are listening for the first time, let me give you a brief synopsis. We've been doing this a little over two and a half years. And what we do is we right now we have been going through the Bible. We started that in August of 24. We're going through the Bible, every book of the Bible. Sometimes we do one book a week, sometimes like the book of Hebrews, which is going to take us at least a month to go through it. And we look at uh the books or the chapters and draw from them leadership principles that can be used um alike immediately. Uh whether you're a you know a CEO of a big 500 comp of Fortune 500 company or uh just uh you're just the leadership of your family, um, or you know, you're the captain of a softball team or a bowling team or swim team, whatever. Um, we're just wanting to give some practical advice that you can literally begin to implement today to work on your leadership. So we're getting to um uh Hebrews chapter five. If you're not familiar with the book of Hebrews, it's in the New Testament. And uh scholars still don't know exactly who wrote this book, but it is a phenomenal lesson on um Christian maturity, but also on leadership. Uh in addition to that, uh, we throw in some dad jokes. Right. Sometimes we do a lot of dad jokes. Who did we decide wrote this? Um well we don't know exactly. Apollos could have, Apollos, that's it. Apollos could have, Barnabas could have. I was just saying, I mean, we solved the mystery just from last show. I mean, if you if you want to look back, we narrowed it down to three people, and we got it. Exactly. We rewrote history. I mean, scholars have been trying to figure this out for 2,000 years. We got it. We got it in like five minutes. Five minutes. Five minutes. So it's just the cliffhanger, watch the listen to the last show, and then see who it was. Oh
Dad Jokes And Why They Matter
my goodness. Well, before we get into Hebrews, we've got a couple of dad jokes we need to do. Dad jokes. Yes, we need to do some dad jokes. Okay, here we go. What is the most musical part of the chicken? Hmm, the musical part of the chicken, the clucker. How about the drumstick? Nice. Little drumstick. Let's let's just start out with a groaner right off the bat, right? Um why is it a bad idea to eat a clock? Simple, easy peasy. You should have it. I should know this one because uh you I don't know. Because it's so time consuming. Oh, yes. Uh oh, say what goes up but never comes down. Uh lately, gas prices. Yeah. How about your age? Oh, nice. I like it. I like it. Oh, let's see. Okay, why should you never I I played tennis when I was in junior high, uh high school, uh, tried out for the tennis team at Baylor. I I didn't wasn't quite good enough to to do that. So uh played for one year in the JV and then had to go to work because I didn't get a scholarship. But why should you never fall in love with a tennis player? I got nothing. This will make no sense unless you play tennis because love means nothing to them. I got it. Exactly. Oh and I'll do that of why should you? Why should you never brush your teeth with your left hand? I do it every day. I don't know. Because a toothbrush works better. Oh yeah, that's right. Okay. Oh. So where did Noah keep all his bees? I don't know. In his archives. Okay, if you had thirteen apples in one hand and ten oranges in the other, what do you have? Fruit salad. I don't know. Big hands. All right, let's get on to the book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 5 And Leadership Growth
Why do we do dad jokes? Because we like dad jokes. We like dad jokes. And we actually have people that like our dad jokes, believe it or not. One of our new listeners uh actually texted me the other day and she said, I love your jokes. I didn't I don't know what about the rest of the show, but I don't know about the rest of the show. But she loves the jokes. It could be almost a dad joke, right? Love your jokes. I don't know about the rest of the show. Yeah, exactly right. So keep telling jokes. Um, so we're Hebrews chapter five. Yeah, Hebrews chapter five. And so the whole book of Hebrews is talking about and laying a foundation for using the Old Testament, uh, especially the first five books of the Old Testament, um, about how Jesus is greater than those things and people that appeared in the Old Testament. So chapter one and two is Jesus greater than the angels and the Torah. Chapter three and four, Jesus is greater than Moses. Uh, here we come to chapter um five and six and seven. And uh we might not get to all that today, but chapter five, six, and seven, focus on how Jesus is greater than the priest and this priest that we read about in the Old Testament called Melchizedek. So we won't get into the history of Melchizedek. Uh I encourage you to go read that, but how Jesus is greater than that. And so we get to uh Hebrews chapter five, and this whole chapter is really talking about growing in maturity. Okay um and um the writer is encouraging uh the listeners, the readers, that they don't he's encouraged them not to stay immature forever. Um and uh I'm sure uh Tim and your experience in uh traveling around the country and speaking at uh leadership conferences that you've dealt with people who want the responsibility of leadership, but they haven't they're not willing to make the sacrifice for the for the maturity of leadership. No, that's exactly right. You know, some people want the title, but then they don't want the responsibility, you know, and and that's that's one of the things that you get, and and it it it works both ways. I know a lot of people that get promoted, and uh they they definitely don't want the title, right? And uh I'm going through one of those right now that he was just on the fence and I know he can do it, so we promoted him and and he's he's pushing back with confidence issues, even though he's a very confident person. I'm like, just embrace it, you know, and and and do it. And he's gonna he's gonna shine ultimately in the process. But but ultimately, like we where we were just saying, not to get too far off track, is people, you know, they they want that benefits of the the the name tag and and but they don't they don't they don't put in the work a lot of times. Now sometimes they do put in the work, that's why they made it to that level, but then once they hit that level, they don't know what to do with it, they don't know how to approach it, they don't know how to um see succeed in their daily activities, uh, because everything changes, you know. Not only do you have to succeed for yourself, you have to succeed as a leader, and a lot of times people get thrown off on that. Yes.
The Mountain Inside Fear And Regret
And so I heard this uh this morning uh on the radio. One of the DJs I was listening to uh was saying this, and I think it's great and very appropriate for right now. And and this is what they said. Sometimes it's not the mountain in front of you that cause you hesitation, it's the mountain inside of you that causes hesitation. And that mountain could be fear, it could be worry, it could be lack of self-confidence, it could be like, I don't know if I can do this, you know, it's so many things. And so it's not just the thing that, oh gosh, I've got to get my act together, I have to do this, that's you know, that in front of me. Sometimes you have to work on the inside of yourself. Um, and so if that's where you are, I you might need a coach. You might need somebody to help you deal with what's going on inside of you so that you can deal with what's going on outside of you. And and if we're not careful, the stuff that's inside of us will keep us from approaching the stuff that was um on the outside. And I'll just give you a perfect example. When I was in college, I had the invitation. There, the Baylor, I went to Baylor University. Uh Baylor University has some incredible music uh musical program. I mean, the music program is phenomenal. And um, I had an invitation to sing in one of the choirs. Okay. And and I just didn't have the confidence that I had a good enough voice to even try out. Right. I was encouraged to. The person who invited me thought I could do it. I didn't have the confidence. And and it's one of those things I regret because looking back on it, and that could have been a great experience, but I just didn't have the confidence in myself. And I should have, looking back on it, um, had someone just helped me talk through that fear, that mountain inside of me was fear or fear of failure, or I'm not good enough to do this. There's these incredible music majors and voice majors, and I'm I'm just a chemistry major, then a religion major. You know, I I I didn't feel I even had the the voice to do that. Uh obviously they thought I did, I didn't think I did. And so sometimes people see in you what you don't see in yourself. And and so you need help sometimes uh from other people to unlock what's there inside of you so you can get through that mountain on the inside and approach the mountain on the outside. Yeah. And and that's what uh the book of Hebrews here in chapter five is So do you want to sing for us? No. Not not on the radio. If I don't I don't have my guitar with me. Yeah, I'll be there. I mean you have to have oh look, there's one over in the corner of the yeah. But I will tell you, um I will tell you that uh when I was uh starting seminary, um, Diana was in physical therapy school in Memphis, I was in seminary in Atlanta, um, the apartment that I shared with this guy was about as big as this room right here. And there were two of us in this apartment. And so I was in the back, literally the back bedroom. There was nothing in that room but the bed. I mean, that was it, okay? And and so um I and this was back in the you know late 70s. Uh there was no internet, there was no cell phones. There, you know, we got to talk to each other once a week on the phone because a long distance call was expensive back then. So we wrote a lot of letters, and we would talk into a cassette tape and then mail the tapes to each other. That's what we did. Well, I just was thinking about Diana and you know, excited about getting married to her and knowing I was getting married, I was marrying way above myself, just like you did. You know, of course, exactly. Right? That's one of the many things we have in common. And this song just came to me and I pulled out my guitar. I hadn't been playing guitar that long, but pulled out my guitar and just wrote this song, and I recorded it on a uh cassette tape and I mailed it to her, and she played it over and over and over again. Well, somehow that cassette tape over time has gotten lost, and she wanted it on her phone. So I um uh talked to this guy who's a phenomenal recording artist. He is uh he's actually the one in the studio, Chuck Ebert. Um and uh he doesn't live too far from me, and he's one of Grammy, he's just really good. And so last Wednesday, I was at his studio recording that song. And then um he emailed me the MP3 and I gave it to Diana uh last Wednesday night, and now she has it on her phone. And uh yeah, so she puts uh earplugs in when she listens anymore. But it's like, you know, um one of those things, all of us have regrets, okay? And so we look back and think, I should I should have done that. I don't know why I didn't do it, you know. Um and I'm encouraging those leaders that are listening to us, that are everybody, um don't don't live life with any more regrets. You know, deal with what's going on inside of you so you can deal with what's the out there in front of you, and you will be so much happier by doing that. So uh that I think Hebrews is Hebrews chapter five is saying, hey, you don't need to be immature forever. Jesus didn't design us to be immature, uh, he designed us to mature. Uh and the same thing with leadership. Okay, you've got a position of uh promotion, or you're in charge of you know your bowling team or whatever, and you don't know, you just kind of got thrown into it, you got elected because no one else wanted to do it. Right. And it's like, okay, um learn how to be a leader. And one of that is dealing with your fear of not doing it right. And uh seek advice, seek a coach, you know, whatever you need to make that work. Yeah, and that's uh sort of the the theme here is the writer is concerned that these believers have become sluggish in their growth and they should be further along spiritually and and they they still need the the basics, you know. They they need to repeat them more and more, and that's that's that's a leadership conversation right there. Yes, it is. Uh because evidently the people that or let's just say most of the people he that this author was writing to have been uh of the Christian faith for years. We don't know how many years, uh, but obviously they were because he was thinking they were going to be more mature in their faith. Now, repeating the fundamentals and getting the fundamentals down is always important. Okay. Uh you're you're in construction, you build really nice houses, and and and the foundation is absolutely a crucial part of what happens. But if you only have the foundation and you don't build on it, then then it's like you wouldn't do that with a house, you wouldn't do that with office building, right? You know, a parking garage. But but he's saying he the writer is basically saying that's what people are doing with their faith. They built a foundation, but they haven't done anything since. Right. And and so it's move on. So if you're a leader, okay, you got in the position. If you haven't done anything for yourself to grow in your leadership, you haven't taken a leadership class, you haven't read a book, you haven't listened to a podcast, whatever it is, to grow in your knowledge and practice of leadership, then maybe that's the next step is to start building on that foundation. Um and sometimes you just need to be reminded of the foundations and make sure you have those correct. I I just remember the quote uh from Vince Lombardi back in before the 1961 football season. He walks into a locker room with a football in his hand, he says, Gentlemen, this is a football. You know? It's like sometimes you have to repeat the fundamentals. Right. Um and uh and so that's what the writer is re you gotta get him down, but that's just the beginning. Yeah, that's not the end of the journey, right? So yeah.
Authority Given Humility Required
One of the things I see in Hebrews 5 is that Jesus did not appoint himself, he was appointed by the Father. Right. So I I think that in leadership matters because real authority is is not self-grabbed, self you know, satisfaction. It's it's entrusted, it's it's gave to you because there people have beliefs in you. Correct. It's almost like okay, the mantle of leadership is now placed in your hands. Uh you're not the owner of the mission. We talked about this last week. You're the now the steward, the head steward of the mission. And your job at some point is going to be making sure that mission continues. Uh sometimes leaders they need to make hard choices. And some people as leaders, they don't like to make hard choices at all, period. Right. Um, they they just deny they have to be made, they put it off, they have to do. I I I've worked with some people that they had to do keep doing research and more and more and more research before they'd ever make a decision. I'm thinking, uh, you've been doing this for four months. You know, you need to make a decision at some point. Right. Okay. Even if it's wrong, let's make a decision, and then if it's wrong, we'll correct it and move forward. Um, but let's make a decision. And and some people just that's really hard for them to do. It's just really hard. It is. And then, you know, the flip side of that is people are a lot of times trying to prove that they are the ones in charge, right? So through through, you know, not bullying is a bad word, right? But through being that that overarching leader that's that's putting the thumb on the people all the time, right? And and that's really just reveals their insecurity. And and you know, that's one of the things that uh somebody that's in the uh real authority, they don't they don't have to constantly announce themselves. I mean, um you don't have to r remind people who you are and and what your name tag says every time you do before you speak, right? So yeah, but sometimes uh leadership uh people get it, it goes to their head and they almost become arrogant about it, or their ego just goes through the roof. Um and and that's when you start having real issues. Yeah. And a lot of times people that have those ego issues, those arrogance, they don't even recognize it. No, they just don't. And anybody calls them out, they just deny it, and you know, that so you gotta be really careful. Yeah, and that's why I believe it's very important every so often for the leaders to do an evaluation, not a self, just uh not just a self-evaluation, but an evaluation by your peers. Right. Um, so you can think, oh, maybe I'm a little off base here, you know. If you're open to it, that takes some real humility to have other people evaluate you and be honest about it so you can have a course correction. And it's just better for you, it's better for the company, better for your team, whatever. I just think it's important. Yeah, I hired a new sales guy, and and I I had that conversation with him. He's like, you know, talking about this and how he wants to, you know, set up our relationship and all this. I'm like, here's the thing, dude. I said, You can be the owner of the company. I don't care. I mean, just tell them you're my partner. I really that's that's well beyond me at this point in my life. I'm like, I if I go out and I'm in a networking event and they ask me what I do, I'm like, I say I work for him. And I give you know, whoever's next to me, I As long as you don't faint when I say that. Exactly right. So uh other than that, I said just uh go out and tell him you've got a a position and and make it happen, you know. And and because he was worried about, you know, when to bring me in and all this, I'm like, I I'm nobody. I'm I'm another sales guy that we're just going in together and and making it happen. So it's it's one of those things that uh you know we strive to be that way as a leader. And and you know, I do have partnerships and they work really good with some of my with some of my business partners, but uh uh at this point it's just I I'm I don't need that. You know, I don't need to be the person that that controls everything. So yeah. Reminds me of that TV show, I can't remember the name of it, where the boss goes and becomes the undercover boss. Yes. Yes, you know, what a great idea for the somebodies who uh men and women who just go work in the factory, work on the on the line, you know, go back and fry some chicken. I mean, uh just do that and and see the life from those people's perspective and so give you some real insight on how things might need to be changed, you know. Uh it takes humility to do that, it takes guts to do that, um, but it could make some real improvements to your organization by doing that. You know, and maybe um I've I know we've talked about this before. Okay, you have a weekly staff meeting, just have someone else do it. Just have someone else do the and you might write up the agenda, but have someone else lead it, and you sit back in the back corner. Just start training your people to do those kind of things, and uh it'll be amazing what happens. Yeah, and I think one of the things that Hebrews tells us is it shows us the proper order that Jesus handled it, right? Submission before authority, and then he suffered before glory, and then obedience before exaltation, you know, and and I think that's one of the things that you have to be open to is uh looking at how how you handle that authority and and you become prepared to carry that authority. Yes, I I totally agree with that.
Staying Steady In Leadership Pressure
And so we look about um l we talk about leadership, obviously, and and I think it's easy to be a leader when things are calm, right? Oh yeah, very much so. But but real leadership shows up when the client is upset, or your team is frustrated, uh, or the numbers are tight, um, or the decision you make is unpopular, uh, your schedule falls apart, you know, your delivery trucks are not on time. Um it's something is cost more costly than you thought it was gonna be. Um and you know, so those are the kind of things where in your character really comes out, um, your true leadership style comes out. Are you gonna be autocratic about it? Are you gonna be upset about it? Is your language gonna reveal something about you that people have never seen before? So, so you gotta be the leader consistent. And I think that's what Hebrews is talking about. You you don't just need to be mature in your leadership, and you have that foundation of the fundamentals and you build on that, but you've got to be consistent, whether things are calm or things are chaotic. The goal is to be consistent in all of that. And sometimes you need to pull your team together and say, okay, this is a situation. Let's be honest, let's be upfront with everything that's going on. Let's talk about this together. How are we gonna how are we gonna handle that? And uh that's just being good leader, it just is 100%. Yeah, and I I love the verse, uh Hebrews 5, 13 through 14, where it talks about milk. I thought that was a very unique one. Um, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have the powers of discernment and trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. I just love the the because when I was researching, it popped up lives on milk, and I'm like, what is this? And the Bible talks about lives in milk. I'd never seen that verse, so you know it made me laugh. It made me uh really point that one out. Okay, so you're just say you're into uh athletics and you know training or whatever. Uh and like me, after I get out of the pool, I'll have a bagel with peanut butter and honey. Also have a protein shake. Well, basically, they're saying don't you do whatever you do, just keep drinking milk. No, no carbs, no fruit, no vegetables, no nothing else, just milk. It's like you wouldn't survive very long with that. I mean, you could survive for a while, you know, but eventually your body just would just start breaking down and you wouldn't have the energy, you wouldn't have the the mindset. You just there's just some things other than that you need. And I think what a great analogy uh for that. So it's not just the position. You have the name tag, you have the corner office. Uh, that's not what it takes to be a leader, you know. And um, and I'm sure that you've experienced this, I've experienced it many times. Uh, that age does not automatically reveal maturity. No, not at all. It helps tremendously, right? But I've seen some really young people. I mean, I'm talking about teenagers that are incredibly spiritually mature. Uh-huh. And I've seen some people that are, you know, my age and older that are not. You think they are. They lack discipline, they lack courage, and they lack obedience, you know, and that's one of those things that consistency. And consistency. Yes. Communication. I mean, we can know name a few of these that a lot of people don't bring to the table sometimes, but uh it definitely the more gray in your hair or uh and or less hair, you know, in Posey's case. Yes. Uh you get a little bit more. Hair is so overrated. Hair is overrated. Um, you know, a lot of times it does, but there's 100%. I see people all the time that I'm like, really? I mean, uh I just actually went through it last week with uh one of my consulting clients, and it just it it it uh I I scratched my head. So so here's uh just a suggestion.
Milk Vs Solid Food Growth Habits
I would ask, how many books a year are you reading? Yeah, okay, on leadership, not just novels, not just Tom Clancy books, you know, or whatever. Um you should be reading at least two to three books, maybe once a quarter. You should read be reading a leadership book. And and there's some good ones out there. I mean, John Maxwell's great, um, you know, Stephen Cubby's great. I know they're old school, but they are really, really good stuff. Right. Um now, Dale Carnegie, I mean, he's talking about old school. Um, he's Zig Ziggler, they are very old school. But Dale Carnegie and talking about learning people's names is such a good leadership principle. Right. Uh, you should know everybody in your organization. If you have 50 people or less, or even a hundred, you should know everybody's name. Um, and the more you do, the more they realize that you value them. Um, and that is so so now it might take a while. It's a personal connection. So I'd say leadership podcast, um, like the Biblical Leadership Show or other podcasts. There's so many bib, so many leadership podcasts out there. I mean, look at us. We know all seven of our listeners' names. Let's see. Your wife, my wife, your two kids, uh, my two kids. We're good. We're good. We don't know everybody's names. I mean, that's the the dedication we put into this show. Oh, wow. Oh, that made me laugh. Okay, so so here we're going back to uh Hebrews chapter five, and he said, you know, you're still immature. You should be teachers by now. You should should know this by now. And he's not trying to criticize them. He's trying to hold up a mirror and say, hey, wake up. You have a lot more potential than you're showing. And I I we you need to be moving forward instead of just kind of hibernating where you are. Um, and he's not just talking about faith, he is talking about faith mainly. But what a true principle for your people in your organization. Um, okay, so you have some people that have been doing, you know, finance for 10 years. Um, do they have the current software? Are you challenging them to learn something new on the computer? Are you have you taken them or sent them to a continuum ed class to learn more about whatever software you're using? Um, you know, so so it's just like every one of your employees or people should be growing in their skill level. Yeah. Yeah. Now, some are faster learners than others, no question about it. Right. But everybody should have the opportunity to be growing. So I think that's a great principle. And that's a mindset, you know, and and if you're not growing, then you need to look. Is it is it your mentor? Is it your coach? Is it your uh attitude? Is it your uh discipline? Is it your daily schedule? Whatever it might be, are you doing anything to make yourself better? Are you just being that rinse and repeat every day? You know, I always tell people, believe white space on your calendars and don't use that white space for checking emails. If you get across town and you got there early, watch a masterclass, listen to an audio book, do something that makes you better, that makes you better than when you woke up that morning. And if you continue to do that times 20 years, you've you've got a lot of knowledge that you might not have ever had. Yes, and some people I I don't they can always find excuses not to do that. Um but if you actually begin to do that, and it's literally it's baby steps. Yeah. Okay.
