Faithful Leaders Lay Aside What Slows Them
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Pressure has a way of telling the truth about us. When deadlines hit, money gets tight, or a team starts to wobble, our habits and priorities get exposed fast, and that’s why Hebrews 12 and 13 feel so practical for leaders. We pick up where the “cloud of witnesses” leaves off and talk about how faith turns into real decisions, real tone, and real behavior when people are watching.
We dig into the leadership edge of “lay aside every weight” and why many of us don’t need another new tactic as much as we need subtraction: fewer distractions, clearer priorities, and an endurance mindset. From there, we get honest about correction and accountability. Weak leaders avoid feedback to stay liked, harsh leaders use it to control, and mature leaders coach because they care about the person, the mission, and the standard. We also share simple tools that improve performance management, like setting expectations early and ending hard conversations with one clarifying question: “What did you hear me say?”
Hebrews 13 then zooms out into everyday, Monday-through-Sunday integrity: hospitality, compassion, marriage, money, contentment, generosity, and leadership that matches what we claim to believe. We connect that to workplace culture and mission statements that people can actually remember and live, plus stories that show how values show up in coaching and team dynamics.
Subscribe, share this with a leader who needs encouragement, and leave a review so more people can find the Biblical Leadership Show. What’s one “weight” you need to lay aside this week?
Oh now, yeah.
SPEAKER_02All righty,
Welcome Back And Summer Updates
SPEAKER_02welcome, welcome, welcome, welcome, and how you doing there.
SPEAKER_00How you doing, Dr. Posey? I'm doing fantastic today. How you doing?
SPEAKER_02Well, you know, I'm hanging out, doing good. Good. Just rolling through July. We just keep on going on, going on. Yeah. Yeah. I just got back from spending time in DC, so not too bad. I'm fourth in the celebration. I got there afterwards. Wasn't a little crazy, but that's all right. I always enjoy going to DC to get a little work done and uh go hang out with some peeps.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, that's good. Glad you made it back safe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, thanks, sir. Thank you.
SPEAKER_00A lot of good things going on in DC this uh last couple of weeks, yeah, celebrating 250 years of our country, our great country.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So uh glad you had it back in the studio.
Why We Study Scripture As Leaders
SPEAKER_00And uh today we're finishing up uh the book of Hebrews, hopefully. Book of Hebrews, hopefully. Hopefully. That's our plan. Chapter 12 and 13. So that's our plan. Yes. So for those of you who are uh listening to us for the very first time, thank you for tuning in to the Biblical Leadership Show podcast. Uh my name is Dr. Dean Posey. With me is Tim Lansford. Absolutely. And uh we've been doing this, this is episode 127. So a little under three years we've been doing this. And um been hanging out with you for three years. No, it's crazy. This is awesome. Uh enjoy being in the studio with you. And so what we do uh we have the last two years, uh really, and we started the end of August in 2024 going through every book in the Bible. Sometimes we go through a book in one podcast, sometimes, like the book of Hebrews, we take several podcasts to go through.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Um, but we look at not just the scripture, but also the biblical uh the leadership principles that come from the scripture that you can apply to your life today. So we might have to go through them forward and then we can go backwards. Yeah, maybe so. Take another three years. Whatever. It's been good. It has been good. It's been really, really good. And I I thank you for all the listeners that we have around the world tuning in us, tuning into us. And so uh thank you. But plus, in addition to talking about the Bible, we do throw in some dad jokes. Some dad jokes, yes. It makes our podcast very, very unique. So um anyway, I I just like I like that word, unique. I'm sure a lot of people are saying, oh, this is unique.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so yeah.
SPEAKER_00So
Dad Jokes Before The Deep Dive
SPEAKER_00what did the judge speaking of dad jokes, here we go? Oh what did the judge say when a skunk walked into the courtroom?
SPEAKER_02I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Odor in the court.
SPEAKER_02That's almost a groaner.
SPEAKER_00Almost right on the verge.
SPEAKER_02Oh man, about six months ago, my dog got skunked.
SPEAKER_00It was oh, that's horrible. Yeah, we had a Labrador. Oh my goodness. Oh, it's it's horrible. Back then they said wash your dog in tomato juice and whatever. We did all that kind of stuff. That dog just thought it was the greatest thing to smell like that. I mean, she was a great dog, but oh my goodness, it was horrible.
SPEAKER_02It was, it was, it was crazy. Yeah. Okay, why is the what did the buffalo say to his son when he dropped him off at school? My son. I know we just had last week. Okay, why is England I was wondering if you'd remember I saw it? I was like, I gotta say it again.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes I don't remember what I had for breakfast, so I'm surprised. Okay, here is the question. Why is England the wettest country?
SPEAKER_03I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Because they've had so many kings and queens that have been reigning there.
SPEAKER_02Oh boy. All right, here's a good one I like. Uh why do you never see elephants hiding in trees?
SPEAKER_00Because they can't climb them?
SPEAKER_02Nah, because they're so good at it.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Why are vampires so easy to fool? Ooh.
SPEAKER_02Um something a bite. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Close, because they're suckers. Oh, did you hear, you know, this whole thing about uh uh, you know, NASA and the the spacecraft and all the stuff that uh that they're planning to go to the moon to set up a colony, it's just fascinating. So but you know, Lance NASA launched a satellite to say sorry to the aliens. Oh, yeah, it's called Apollo G.
SPEAKER_02I said, I like that one.
SPEAKER_00You like that?
SPEAKER_02I like that one.
SPEAKER_00That was good.
SPEAKER_02Just little things, you know. It's uh, you know, I don't mind that one.
SPEAKER_00So over the weekend, we were just driving around, stopped at a roadside stand that said lobster tails, two dollars. We thought, whoa, that's we can't pass that up. So got out, paid my two dollars, and the guy said, Well, once upon a time there was this lobster.
SPEAKER_02That was pretty good too. I like that. Two in a row. That'll give you a little bit of a big thing. Oh my goodness. It must be easy going today, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Um, so here's the last one before we get to the Bible, maybe. What do you call a monster with a high IQ? I do not know.
SPEAKER_02Frank Einstein.
SPEAKER_01All right, enough of that.
SPEAKER_02No worries.
Hebrews Turns Belief Into Practice
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Hebrews 12 and uh possibly 13. I bet you we can make it through it today.
SPEAKER_00I bet we can. Uh chapter 12 and 13, great uh passages in the Bible, but also some great leadership principles. So uh uh let me just kind of give a synopsis, maybe in one sentence, um, of chapter uh 10 and 11. And and so uh chapter 11 shows great examples of faith. We walk talked about that last week. Um chapters 12 and 13 begin to answer some practical questions. So uh the whole foundation is if Jesus is better and faith is the way forward, then how should we live and lead now? So it takes all the theoretical stuff and puts it into some very practical, this is how you should live, lead, and you know, honor God. And so that's kind of what um uh chapter 12 and 13. It's it's it's really moves us from believing better to living better. And and so there's some great leadership principles uh in that. And and so chapter 12 starts out by pointing, uh, you know, since we're s surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, um, and that really first back to chapter 11, where he guessed the list, the author gives the list of all these people.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was that we we didn't really get into that on really strong on the last one down there, but that was a whole list of people from all their faith and and their journey and all this stuff.
SPEAKER_00All the way back into the Old Testament, and and some of them, you know, they were they were all faithful to God. That was the whole point. They were all faithful to God, and and some of them had some incredible lives, some of them had some incredible sorrows, but they were all faithful to God, no matter what the circumstances. And I think that's the lesson is that are we gonna be faithful uh regardless of the circumstances? And so let's think about a leadership principle, not just a religious principle, and that is are we gonna be faithful to our mission um and leading people regardless of what the market does, regardless of what's going on in the circumstances or whatever, are we just gonna just kind of throw up our hands and say, forget it, or are we gonna persevere and and uh make the best out of it with uh people around us? And and that's uh a really good question. Yeah, because sometimes leaders face some difficult uh decisions they have to make, and and we've both known people that just refuse to make decisions. Right. Well, I learned a long time ago that not to decide is to decide, you know, just not making a decision is making a decision, and sometimes by not making a decision you make things worse. Uh and so make a decision. It might be wrong. I've made plenty of wrong decisions in my life. Um, but it's like you make a decision, you realize, oh, a month or two later, that wasn't the right one. So let's rethink and and you know, change course while we can.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So yeah, and we sort of talked about um the leadership side of this where it was talking about, and I think that's one of the things that we we were discussing before the show is um, you know, leaders often ask, what do I need to add compared to Hebrews 12? Ask, what do I need to lay aside? And we sort of went down the rabbit hole talking about different things and and how our brain works, and you know, I I've got a lot of stuff going on, and I I juggle a lot of stuff, and you're you're more of the focus guy, you know, brain. So I mean that's why we're a good balance, you know, the way we do things. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00So let me just read uh chapter 12 from the book of chapters 12, verse 1.
Lay Aside Weight And Focus
SPEAKER_00It says this therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, and that's referring to chapter 11, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which cling so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us. Um so let's just pause there because some great leadership principles. Um, and like you just said, uh, and I've done this for years, and that's like, okay, I need what can I do more, or what can I do more of to do better? And and really what this author is saying, sometimes it's not a matter of doing more. Sometimes it's a matter of doing less. Right. And by doing less, then you can focus on those crucial principles that uh you want to live by. And and so many times we find ourselves just piling on the guilt because we have we feel that we haven't done enough, we haven't done this, we haven't done that. And it doesn't mean those things don't need to be done. Okay. The question is, as the leader, as the CEO, as the president, uh, are you the one that has to do all of that? Or are you training your people to do it? So some of the times the best leadership uh decisions we can make is what am I gonna not do? What am I gonna lay aside? It's the 80-20 principle. You know, I'm gonna do 20% of the stuff, but get 80% of the results. And so many times we focus on the 80%. Right, you know, we focus on the 80% that gets 20% of the results, and it takes up our time, it takes up our energy, it takes up our brain power, it just zaps us, and then we get to the 20%, and by that time it's like, I just don't feel like doing that. So I would say examine your week, you know, going back to the uh Stephen Covey principles, all that kind of stuff, or whatever you want to use, lay out your week, lay out your priorities, and think, do I have to really do that? Or do the hardest things in your day first? Do them before lunch, get the hard stuff done, and then afternoon you can do other things. And so um just a great thing. Lay aside that weight that you doing, maybe doing too much and focus on less things, but do them really, really well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, what's gonna give you the biggest bang for your buck? You know, what's those big rocks? And we went over that in one of these guys, you know, make sure that you're doing your big rocks first before for you get caught up in all the little feel-good stuff, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes, exactly correct. So, so and and think about this as we move forward through um uh chapter 12 of Hebrews.
Correction Without Rejection
SPEAKER_00Um the because as a as a CEO, as a leader, uh as a president of a company, whatever role you are, one of the things you're gonna have to do is deal with people, your people, right? And so the question is how do you deal with people? Um and sometimes you have to encourage them, but sometimes you have to correct them uh or guide them. Uh let's just say that. Um and it it really depends on how you do that, um, your tone of voice, the language you use, your body position, all that kind of stuff. Um but it we you want to be sure that correction is not rejection. Um and and that so many times I you know I've made the mistake of of doing that, that you know, I feel like I've rejected the person instead of just you know correcting their behavior. Um and and so it's um it needs to be done uh with kindness. Yeah. Love, right? Yes. And um and so there's a whole list here that we have in our notes. You know, weak leaders avoid correction because they want to be liked, harsh leaders weaponize correction because they want to be in control. Um mature leaders correct because they care about the person, the mission, and the standard. Uh discipline is not punishment for punishment's sake, it is development.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, 100%. You you you can't hold people accountable if you don't have um a list of things to hold them accountable, but once you hold them accountable and you give them punishment, that that actually makes them better. That that gives them uh some kind of baseline to say, well, you know, this is where you're at, this is where I need you to be, through discipline, through a performance plan, whatever it might be, we we need to get you up here because that's what I'm striving to as a leader to get you up to this. Because I mean, I always want the leaders, uh, the people that work for me, I want them to be two times as good as me, right? It's just because if I can give you the tools and resources maybe I didn't have when I was growing through my leadership journey, uh, you know, and and there are a lot, you know, nowadays. And we used we used to go sign up for classes back in our day, and you'd have to go take a class with, you know, 20, 50, 200 people in there. Now you can literally, if you're if you're deficient in something, get on YouTube, watch 10 videos, spend two hours doing it, and uh become an expert in in something instantly if you want to, and you'll spend the time to do it. And it's this information age that we live in is just an amazing time for leaders.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and
Clear Expectations And Better Evaluations
SPEAKER_00it's important that if you are the leader and you're responsible, you know, people are responsible to you, and you are the one doing evaluations of them, which hopefully you're doing on a semi-annual or annual basis, they need to know what the expectations are. So if you have uh something that you know has to get done within a certain time frame, um your employee needs to know what that time frame is, what the expectations are. So when you do an evaluation, um they they know before the evaluation ever happens, I didn't meet this deadline. And and so uh the way I did it is I would, you know, would lay out expectations, um, but I would meet with the people on a sometimes weekly basis, sometimes you know, monthly basis, just to find out can I help you in any way? Is there some struggle? Oh, this thing, I didn't see this thing coming. Okay, well let's let's move the timeline around, or maybe we need to change the the the focus uh just a little bit. Um because you know, you you don't just need to give somebody a a goal or you know what they need to do, but you need to give them the tools to actually do it and uh an expectation of what you expect when you expect it and the quality you expect it in. Right. And if they know that ahead of time, you know, then uh that's just good leadership.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, 100%. Yeah. 100%.
Strengthen Weak Spots Before Failure
SPEAKER_00And so um, and so the another leadership principle from Hebrews is uh strengthen what is weak before it fails. And uh I'd say so just think about that uh from um an employee standpoint. If you have an employee that's just not cutting the mustard, you know, as we used to say, um, and you need to focus on that person, uh, which I've had to do, you know, um sit down with a person, um just talk about their performance or you know, whatever. And and it's if at all possible, you know, you've spent some time and money and research to hire that person. Um it's a lot better uh if it works to um work with a person and see if they're willing to be corrected, and then instead of letting them go and then spend all the time and money and energy to hire another person and train them. Um sometimes you just have to let a person go, you know, and I've had to do that unfortunately a couple of times in my career. Um and uh and so you know, it's not always fun to do. Um, but uh you try to do everything you can to prevent that from happening, but sometimes they're just not willing to, you know, abide by what you say, or they're gonna just keep doing what they're doing and in spite of whatever. And and so you gotta let them go. But it doesn't mean you don't try.
SPEAKER_02You know, yeah. I mean I've had you know HR departments I was working with, and we were gonna do an executive coaching program, and and they said, What's the option? You take this program or you get fired or demoted. And person's like, I'll take demotion and didn't want to be in management and didn't want to deal with the BS of going through a six-month program. So, you know, everybody has their own buttons, and you never can assume you just you know, see everybody's on their own leadership journey.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, and I remember one person, I won't say the name, but hired us. Oh, come on, sitting off this getting which which we thought it should be really, really good. And uh, you know, for about a month that was true.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then uh showed up to uh church on Sunday morning when everybody was working, you know, we needed to be there by eight, sometimes seven thirty. And she'd show up, she'd be there, but she'd bring her breakfast and go up to an upstairs room and eat her breakfast and then not really be at work. And then Sunday morning she'd just sit around on her phone, you know, and uh I finally had to confront her about those kind of things because it was getting obvious to people, and uh she just chose not to change, you know. I'm I'm gonna eat my breakfast and when I'm hungry, and and it's like, can you eat it in the car on the way? Nope, nope, you know, can you uh this is not a time to be on your phone. Well, I you know, I want to be on my phone. So, you know, things like that when uh you have an employee that's just gonna be that way, you you give them a chance, but uh you can't give them uh infinite number of chances. No, no, and so we finally had to let her go, which was uh she's a very talented individual, but it just wasn't working for us. So, you know, but you're doing it in a kind way, um, and you lay out the expectations before any of that happens. So um uh try to try to strengthen what's weak before it totally fails on you. Yeah. So we m keep moving forward, um and um we get into the toward the you know, chapter 12 around verse 25 and stuff like that.
Pressure Exposes Leadership Gaps
SPEAKER_00And and um uh so when when you when you're under pressure, and all of us as leaders are under pressure for something, okay? It could be a financial pressure, it could be a delivery pressure, it could be, you know, some of our delivery trucks are broken down, we don't have the maintenance crew, it could be, you know, we're in in charge of a lawn service and and the weather's bad, you know, and we haven't been able to do it, haven't been able to, you know, bill our customers. So um there's gonna be pressure that every leader faces. And um pressure does not create a weakness, uh, as exposes a weakness that's already there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, 100%.
SPEAKER_00And and so the question is, how do you respond as a leader when something happens that's not under your control? Um that says a lot about your character, says a lot about your leadership style.
SPEAKER_02Um and uh Yeah, I thought I thought this this chapter was probably one of the strongest leadership sections in Hebrews, the way it sort of talks about the pressure and and you know, we we've always gone through pressure, you know, we've all gone through Um different things in the church through businesses, you know, from bad communication to unclear standards, um, some of the uh the the immature leadership that might be we with the some of the people that are leaders that are hiding behind the veil that we sort of talked about last show that had that have this fake front and that that we can't stand. We've both been in jobs over the past that you know went through that. But I think one of the things is um uh as a leader is to identify what what it is, correct it, and then build from there. I mean, you're never not gonna have anything. It's leadership's never gonna be a perfect scenario throughout the course of leadership. It's taking what you're dealt, figuring out what the what it is, identify the root cause, figure out how to correct it, and then move on, build from it, make that person. There's a lot of people that have been people that were close to being fired, and then through a few things that we've done, they end up being some of the most star employees uh long term, and it can be done. It's just figuring it out as a leader.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and it is being honest, yeah, in in a kind way, you know, you don't have to get there and start yelling at people, right? Um, but uh identify a weakness, identify an issue, and and be up up front about it. You know, too
Say It Clearly Then Confirm It
SPEAKER_00many people that I've worked with have beat around the bush, you know, they'll say it, but they don't really say it, and then you wonder what's the real issue here. Um, and so as best as you can, you need to be honest about it and but with kind language and and so and let people um you know, at the end of a meeting with someone, you it's always nice to say, okay, what did you hear me say?
SPEAKER_02Right. You know, that's always a good thing.
SPEAKER_00Because because sometimes you say it and they'll nod, but then you ask them that question, what did you hear me say? And it's totally different than what you wanted to convey. So just because you said it doesn't mean the person heard it in the way you you said it or that you intended. So that's always a great question to ask before you finish a meeting with a person. What did you hear me say? And what did you hear me say as far as the actions that we're gonna do going forward?
SPEAKER_02No, that's great. If most people do that, I mean biggest thing that we have in in corporate is communication, you know, communication and twists. It's one of the major the the top two or three things that you know that's why leadership communication is the the big one.
Hebrews 13 Practical Daily Leadership
SPEAKER_02So so 13, it it hits a little different, right? Because it's full of full of more of uh practical commands, right? And tell us a little bit about where where they were going with this.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so up to 12, really beginning in 12, there's a transition. Okay, here's the here's the foundation. Okay, now it's time to live it, and this is how you're going to live it. Um and so there's a bunch of principles there uh about brotherly love, hospitality, compassion, talks about marriage and money and contentment and leadership and worship, generosity, all those kind of things. Um and so I think what what the author is getting to is that the Christian faith excuse me, the Christian faith is not just some theoretical thing on paper. There are some practical ways to live that if you believe these, they should be evidence in your actions and in your daily lifestyle, from whether your your voice, your the words you use, the actions that you take, the actions you take towards other people, uh especially in your family. Um and and so by the actions that you have um and the words that you say and the tone of voice that you use, uh people can really tell what's important to you. Um and so that is some practical uh uh chapter 13 is just some practical advice on a lot of different areas. Doesn't go in too too deep into any one thing, but just to show that um there are some uh practical ways to live out the faith if this is what you really believe. And our actions really, if you analyze your actions, they really do give an evidence of what you believe anyway. And so if you believe in uh Christian faith uh and that's your belief, then your actions should show that to other people.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00So I think the leadership principles, uh huh, if this is our mission and this is our vision, this is our purpose of a company, this is what we're trying to do, then the actions of the employees, even if there's just one of you, should reflect that particular uh statement, those words that you believe in. Um
Mission Statements That Shape Behavior
SPEAKER_00and that's why we talked about this several weeks ago about a mission statement. Um, you know, a mission statement for some companies, it's like a paragraph long, and so no one really knows what it is. They really don't know their purpose. And so we always tried to have a mission statement that was 10 words or less, so people could, you know, know it. I worked for a church last year in Waco and every staff meeting, they would quote their mission statement um just because they wanted to make sure that everybody understood it and everything we should do should focus on that mission statement.
SPEAKER_02Most people don't know it.
SPEAKER_00They don't know it. Um, and so the question is if you're living the life you want to live, your actions are really uh showing other people what you believe. And so if you are the CEO of a company, you're the leader, whatever, their actions, your your language, your tone of voice, all that kind of really does tell other people what you really believe and what's your important thing, what your priorities are.
What Leaders Value Shows Up Fast
SPEAKER_00And um, we were watching uh something on on the on TV the other day, and this this uh soccer coach, obviously we're all into soccer right now, but right this is a kind of a obviously a made-up story, but the soccer coach was coaching a young teenage uh soccer team, but he was all about winning, yeah, not developing the skills, just yelling at the players all the time, and it was so obvious that this coach was only about winning and didn't care how he treated his players, what he said to them. Um, and I just thought, well, how sad is that? It is you know, these these young players are not professional, you know, they might become professional, but they're not. They need to be encouraged on the proper way to, you know, play soccer, not just being yelled at for what they were doing wrong. And so so I thought, you know, that's uh a good leadership lesson. It's how do we lead? Uh are we encouraging people to do better? Are we just criticizing them and it just doesn't get better?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we had a real life example. We played a tournament. My son played a tournament, basketball tournament over the weekend a few weeks back, and and we were actually playing a uh rival gym in the town where he does his training, and and after the game, um our coach, he's just a good Christian guy. That's his foundation of his his uh you know training and everything. He just sort of went by and said bye to everybody and shook hands and he just kept going and he he shook hands of some of the the parents of the opposite team. He was just, you know, he's a good, happy guy, and and uh that's just his beliefs, and he was just hey, thank you. Thanks for showing up on you know this Saturday morning. And then after um this, the the parents brought their son uh to come try out our gym because their coach is uh one of those exactly yelling and cussing and all these young kids and and my coaches, our coaches, you know, Christian beliefs and all this, and he's now transitioned, and now he's a full member of our gym based on us playing him in a game. He's just all the principles that you lead when people aren't looking, and and it it's it showed in at who he was as a coach.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, and it shows you what you really value, yeah. And obviously, sometimes people value the winning or the bottom line, more than they value the people. And um, so that's just uh a great thing. So in really as we end up chapter 13 here, you know, uh whatever you believe is gonna come out in the way you live. And the writer of Hebrews is saying, okay, if this is what you believe in God, if this is what you believe in Jesus, that he is better than Moses, he's you know the h highest of priests, you know, his sacrifice was just once for all, then that should be reflected in how you live. Yeah. And so he just gives all these different examples about living. And this was obviously in the first century, but I think the principles are still good for today.
Unchanging Jesus And Consistent Character
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I I put it as my my follow my finished statement is you know, Hebrews 13 is a practical landing point because Jesus is unchanging. Our lives should become more faithful, more generous, more courageous, and more accountable. That's sort of a summary that I put in the book.
SPEAKER_00I think it's fantastic summary. And uh so wow, finishing up uh the book of Hebrews. We made it for Hebrew. Yeah. So
